As far as a plot goes, there isn't much of one, that's part of the fun!
You are a young human moving to a town inhabited completely by anthropomorphic animals. (anthropomorphic being humanoid animals ala beatrix potter)

- After the game has started up and the start screen is on, the first thing you should do is make a new resident. After that's done the game begins with your character in a taxi talking to the driver. The questions he asks you will determine your appearance and also your name and the name of your town. Choose carefully!
- When you get out the the cab you'll arrive at the town hall. Inside you'll meet the person in charge of the Civic Centre of the town (who is a pelican, by the way), she will explain to you that you were expected and there is a house waiting for you from Tom Nook. Upon arriving at your sparsely decorated home you will be greeted by Tom. He will explain that although he doesn't want you paying immediately, he would like you to pay a mortgage. In order to help do this he will give you a position in his shop (where you will earn surprisingly little) to help you pay off the debt.
