As far as a plot goes, there isn't much of one, that's part of the fun!
The player is a young human moving to a town inhabited completely by anthropomorphic animals.

- After the game has started up and the start screen is on, the first thing you should do is make a new resident and find your house so you can get to work. After that's done the game begins with the player's character in a taxi talking to the driver. The questions he asks the player will determine his/her appearance and also his/her name and the name of their town. Choose carefully, these cannot be modified without rebuilding the town/deleting the player.
- When the player get out the the cab he/she will arrive at the town hall. Inside the player will meet Pelly or Phyllis, who are in charge of the Civic Centre and the post office. She will explain to you that the player was expected and there is a house built for you by Tom Nook. Upon entering and exiting your house, which contains a box and a candle, you will be greeted by Nook. He will explain that although he doesn't want you paying immediately, he would like the player to pay a mortgage. In order to help do this he will give you a part-time position in his shop, where the player earns 1,400 Bells by delivering goods and making ads, after which they are laid off.
