Are the animals in your village moving out after a short stay? Do you want to make sure that your favorite animal never leaves? Are you hoping that your favorite animal gives you his picture to display in your house? Here are tips on how to keep your villagers happy.

[edit] Writing letters

All animals like to receive letters, and many of them will remind you in conversation that you should correspond with them. Follow the tips below to write letters your animals will like.

  • Use good spelling. Do not abbreviate words, such as "u" instead of "you", because the animal will think it's gibberish and poorly written.
  • Use actual words. Unlike the animal crossing on the game cube, the animals actually understand human words in Wild World. Letters like: hfoeihrfioe efhoeifrhei fheoirheoi, Do not work. infact they anger the villagers.
  • Include presents. Even seashells, fruit, or 100-bell bags will do.
  • Is it not known whether Positive words (such as "good"), or Negative words (such as "hate") really effect your letter, and whether the animals will like it or not. It is assumed that good or bad words don't effect your letter, because you can receive presents by writing letters like "I hate you alot, and wish you would move away"
  • If you know what the animal's hobby is, mention it (or its keywords).
  • The number of lines you write in a letter tells you what kind of present you will receive if the animal likes your letter.
-If you write one full line you get a shirt OR fruit
-If you write two full lines you get a furniture item
-If you write three full lines or more you get a wallpaper or carpet
  • Do not repeat a word over six times, The animal will consider it gibberish, but you can repeat the same word five-six times it is fine, and the animal will like your letter (As long as its a word they understnad).
Example:
-Friend Friend Friend Friend Friend
is a well known "stock letter" that can be used to gain an animals portrait faster.

[edit] Tasks

If an animal asks you to do a favor for them, accept it and be sure to complete it. They tend to be simple delivery tasks ("Please take this letter to Chevre"), and the animal will ask you to complete it within a certain amount of time. Deliver the item, then return to the sender and you will receive a reward.

[edit] Collections

Animals often choose to collect certain items, and will want you to give them items for their collections. Here are a few examples:

Most of these are self-explanatory, but furniture categories are hard, because it is sometimes difficult to tell if a specific piece fits in a category (for example, one of the chairs is brown but has a white cushion -- does that make it a "white furniture"?). You may need to just try some items to see if they fit in the category your animal has chosen.

[edit] Contests

Animals with the fishing or bug-catching hobby will often challenge you to a contest. They come in two flavors: Catch a specific fish/insect first, or catch the rarer fish/insect. The animal will get upset if you turn down his challenge, so accept it even if you don't feel like doing it at the moment. If you don't complete the challenge within the time you're logged in, the animal will challenge you again later; of course, if you wait that long, you will most likely lose (the game calculates how well the animal did based on how long the challenge was open), but that doesn't seem to affect the animal's attitude towards you (in fact, he's probably happier that he won).

[edit] Illnesses

Animals can get sick. When an animal is sick, he will not come out of his house until he is well, so if you don't see an animal all day, it's a good idea to check in at his house and see if he or she is sick. Have a dose of medicine (purchasable at Nook's shop) to give to the animal, and he/she will be very grateful.

[edit] Don'ts

  • Don't hit animals with the net or axe. The shovel and watering can won't affect them. You can set traps and with the pitfall seed and see them fall in, but this does not affect their attitude, because they don't know it was you, and the timing is hard to pull off.
  • Don't refuse things they ask you, whether it be a task or a contest.
  • Don't forget to talk to them at least once a day.

[edit] Moving out

So, after all this, the animal still wants to move out? You can tell he wants to move by visiting him in his house -- you will see that all his belongings are packed up in cardboard boxes. If you speak to him, he will tell you he is moving, and you will be given the choice to say goodbye or to ask him to stay. If you want him to stay, ask him to stay and he may reconsider. If you really want him to stay, go through this interaction multiple times. There seems to an inverse relationship between how much he likes you and how many times you have to ask him to stay. However, you will not find out if you are successful until the next day, when you see if his house is gone or if he's out wandering the town as usual.
