"I caught a clownfish! Who's laughing now?" —New Leaf

The clownfish (クマノミ, Kumanomi?) is a distinctive orange ocean-dwelling fish with white stripes. It is a tiny fish, sharing a shadow size with the marginally rarer seahorse.

Donating to the museum

As with all fish caught in Animal Crossing series, the clown fish can be donated to the museum in each game by talking to Blathers, who will also give some information on it.

In Wild World

Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:

"The clownfish usually finds solace within the fronds of an anemone, wot? These fish are fairly hearty and easy to breed, so they're quite common. If you're going to raise one as a pet, I recommend that you buy an anemone with it!"

It can be found in the back, ocean tank on the left hand side of the aquarium in Wild World.

In City Folk

Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:

"Clownfish go hand in hand with sea anemones, wot? A single clowfish family will take up residence in each sea anemone. Occasionally the clownfish will share some of its food with its landlord... All in all, it's a wonderfully amiable little fish who really knows how to treat its neighbors!"

It can be found in the small tank on the right hand side of the aquarium, sharing its tank with the sea butterfly and surgeonfish in City Folk.

In New Leaf

In New Leaf, an information board in the aquarium will list information about this fish.

"Clown fish spend their lives hiding among the feelers of sea anemones, a place that only they can live. Their homes may be dangerous, but they produce a special coating that protects them from the poison. In exchange for the anemone's protection, the clown fish chases off any parasitic bugs and enemies. Curiously, all clown fish are males when they're young but change into females if necessity demands."

It can be found in the tube-tank in the northeast corner of the room in the river section of the aquarium.

Clownfish are native to Indian and Pacific waters, and can be found in the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Sea. It is usually alongside the surgeonfish and butterflyfish, sharing tropical and reef aquariums. Clownfish are famous for being immune to the stings of sea anemones, which they use for shelter and for food, safe in the knowledge that no other fish can reach them without being stung. They are common in popular culture: the title character in the 2004 Disney film Finding Nemo is a clownfish.
