"It couldn't be in the river, right?"
— Cousteau, after losing his house key, City Folk
Cousteau (ハルマキ, Harumaki?) is a jock frog villager in the Animal Crossing series. He first appeared in Animal Forest, but was absent in Wild World and made a reappearance in City Folk. His name is French, and some famous Frenchmen have had it as a second name. His name and personality together may refer to Jacques Cousteau. His initial phrase, "oui oui," is French for, "yes yes" (or agreement, so usually just "yes"). His species relates to the common French stereotype in which frogs are a type of food, specifically frog's legs. Like Cousteau, Gaston the rabbit and Marcel the dog are French.

However, Cousteau being labelled as French exists only outside of Japan. His name in Japanese is the word "Spring Roll," a traditionally Chinese dish. Thus, his name, house, as well as his appearance may lead him to be labelled as Chinese by some.

Cousteau is a yellow frog with orange spots. He also has a black mustache on his face which goes with his French name and quote. He has white on the tips of both hands, and a brownish color on his feet. His original shirt is a Rally Tee. He may be mistaken for a cranky villager due to his elderly and adult appearance.

Below is a brief description of the jock personality. For more information, click here.
Jock villagers usually appear to have a large amount of energy and are very interested in sports and bodybuilding. They can also be egotistical at times and are somewhat dense. As a jock villager, Cousteau will be very interested in his hobby and will often ask to compete with the player to see who can catch a certain fish or bug the fastest. Cousteau will easily get along with peppy villagers, who share similar traits. However, he will find it difficult to converse with lazy, snooty, and cranky villagers, as he will often not understand the conversation.

In the first three Animal Crossing games, Cousteau has many items from the Exotic Series, such as the Exotic Bed and the Exotic Screen. He also uses the matching wall and flooring, the Exotic Rug and the Exotic Wall. Imperial K.K. plays on a Reel-To-Reel to fit the Asian feel of it.

Cousteau's house in Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a bit different from the past games. It now has an Asian restaurant feel to it, due to the Lazy-Susan Table, salad bar, and revolving spice rack. He still has Exotic furniture, such as the Exotic Table, and two Exotic Screens. He also still has the Exotic Rug, and Exotic Wall, as well as a Reel To Reel playing Imperial K.K.
