- "I caught a darner dragonfly! It better watch its mouth!" —New Horizons
The darner dragonfly (ギンヤンマ, Ginyanma?) is a large bug that flies slowly around town. It is the most common of the summer dragonflies, and is easily recognized by its thin body, large wings, and slow flying speed.
In Pocket Camp, the bug was added in the Summer Bug update in June 2020. However, it was removed in September 2020 during the Fall Bug update.
Donation to the museum[]
As with all bugs in the Animal Crossing series, the darner dragonfly can be donated to the Museum followed by a small talk by Blathers.
In Animal Crossing[]
Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:
"<player>, have you ever peered closely into a dragonfly's eyes? Blech! Ghastly, really."
In Wild World[]
Blathers comments on the bug as follows:
"Tell me, were you aware dragonflies lay their eggs in the water? They do. Juvenile dragonflies are called "nymphs", you know. And they're grotesque too... Yes, sadly, not even youth can render vile insect attractive, I'm afraid."
In City Folk[]
Blathers will accept the darner dragonfly for addition to the museum's bug exhibit:
"At first glance, the darner dragonfly, like all dragonflies, appears to be quite a sleek bug, wot? But in its larval stage, this bug is a beastly little carnivore... I suppose if one were being eaten, one wouldn't care if whoever was doing the devouring looked sleek..."
After donation, the darner dragonfly can be seen flying around on the lower level of the bug room. Occasionally, it will land on the water of the nearby pond for a few seconds.
In New Leaf[]
After donating a darner dragonfly, the museum sign will read:
"The heads and thoraxes of darner dragonflies are colored a lovely yellow green. The males have a light-blue spot on their bellies, which is not a trait the females share. Darner dragonflies can usually be seen flying around bodies of water such as lakes or ponds."
In New Horizons[]
Upon donation to the museum or selecting, "Tell me more about this!" Blathers will say:
"The darner dragonfly is a very fast dragonfly, flying at speeds up to 40 miles per hour! They all have a distinctive green hue, but the males have blue underbellies while the females have yellow ones. It all sounds pleasant enough, no? Well, did you know that their young eat tadpoles...and even some small fish! Worse, these creepy carnivores will eat each other in a pinch! Grotesque does not describe it..."

In Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori[]
In the film, Yu is seen chasing after a dark green dragonfly when Ai is knocking on Apollo's door to deliver a package. Yu, bering careless, knocks Ai into Apollo's prized blue rose garden, which also causes Resetti to pop up and make an introductory rant.
Trivia[]
- The darner dragonfly features in the DLC quest 'Animal Crossing: Fisher King' for the game Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, where it can be caught by bug catching, and sells for 200z.
- In the Japanese capture quote from Animal Forest e+, the player remarks that the darner dragonfly is not silver. This can be explained, as the Japanese word for darner dragonfly, ギンヤンマ (ginyanma?), contains the word 銀 (ぎん gin?), which means "silver".
Further information[]
It is known as Ginyanma ギンヤンマ (Also called Lamenting Silver 銀やんま) in Japanese, Gin meaning Silver and Yanma meaning Dragonfly.
The Lesser Emperor dragonfly is an abundant species. They can usually be seen dashing around bodies of water such as lakes or ponds with other dragonfly and damselfly species. As referenced in City Folk, they prey widely on mosquitoes and midges as adults. But in larvae form, they lurk underwater and feed upon whatever comes within reach. In some species, they may remain aquatic for up to two years.
