"I got an abalone! Why do I want a sandwich now?" —New Horizons

The abalone is a benthic creature found at the bottom of the ocean in New Leaf and New Horizons. Diving is the only way of capturing it.

Donation to the museum[]

In New Leaf[]

In New Leaf, an information board in the aquarium will list information about this creature.

"Abalones grow less than an inch a year, so it takes several years for them to grow to full size. They are related to ear shells and have been used in celebrations and offerings since ancient times."

In New Horizons[]

"My feathers, but the abalone is a most deceptive sea snail, wot wot! After seeing its dull brown shell from the outside, one would think it quite plain. But take a gander inside, and you'll see that the abalone's home is a shimmering beauty to behold! The inner layer of the shell is made of "nacre," or "mother-of-pearl," and, hoo, what a dazzling iridescent hue! Let this be a lesson! You mustn't judge a sea snail by the outside of its shell. Judge it by the inside of its shell instead."

Further information[]

Main article: Abalone on Wikipedia

The shell of abalones is convex, rounded to oval shape, and may be highly arched or very flattened. The shell of the majority of species is ear-shaped. The exterior of the shell is striated and dull. The color of the shell is very variable from species to species which may reflect the animal's diet. The shell of the abalone is exceptionally strong and is made of microscopic calcium carbonate tiles stacked like bricks. Between the layers of tiles is a clingy protein substance.
