Man, if you're heading out at this time of night, you must of overslept something fierce, ohmmm.
― Dobie, Animal Forest e+

Dobie (けん, Ken?) is a cranky (formerly lazy) wolf villager in the Animal Crossing series. He only appeared in the earliest games in the series until his return in Welcome amiibo. In the earlier games, he was an islander, where he had the lazy personality.

His catchphrase comes from the Hindu word "om", often said while meditating. His name may be a reference to the classic R&B musician Dobie Gray, famous for the song "Drift Away" (perhaps because he was a lazy islander), J. Frank Dobie, a Texan folklorist (which is somewhat alluded to by his interior décor), or adobe clay, a reference to his appearance as a Mexican wolf. His German and Italian names reference Sigmund Freud, and his French name includes loup (wolf) and means "little boy"; likely intended to be ironic.

Dobie returned to the series in New Leaf, as part of the Welcome amiibo update. By scanning amiibo cards, this villager can be met via the campground and invited to the town.

He has the nature hobby.

Appearance[]

Dobie GC

Dobie in Animal Crossing

Dobie is a murky-colored gray wolf that resembles a Mexican wolf. His underbelly, jaw, and the tips of his paws and tail are an off-white. The tips of his ears are black and he has a round, black nose and thick eyebrows. Dobie's eyes are rarely shown open but he has golden iris and black sclera eyes when he does open his eyes. He is probably elderly due to wrinkles around his eyes, mouth, and muzzle, and this is also support by his picture quote, "Old longings never truly fade". In Animal Crossing and the other earlier games, he wears the Blue Aloha shirt, like all male islanders, but this is changed to the sweater vest in Welcome amiibo, and a blue Fuzzy Vest in New Horizons.

Personality

Dobie's personality changes from a lazy islander in Animal Crossing to a cranky villager in Welcome amiibo.

In Animal Crossing

Below is a brief description of the lazy personality. For more information, click here.

As a lazy villager, Dobie will be friendly and easy to get along with due to his laid back lifestyle. Like all lazy villagers, he has a love of food and relaxing. He will enjoy partaking in the usual hobbies, usually for relaxing reasons or for food, like when fishing. Dobie will get along well with other villagers, but may offend or confuse jock villagers, who have a lifestyle of exercise and fitness, which conflicts with the lazy lifestyle of relaxing and food. He will get along with other lazy villagers with whom he will talk about food, comics, or superheroes. He will also get along well with normal, peppy, smug, and sisterly villagers, and occasionally cranky villagers, but may from time to time annoy snooty villagers, who disagree with the lazy lifestyle.

In Welcome amiibo onward

Below is a brief description of the cranky personality. For more information, click here.

Cranky villagers will usually appear in a grouchy or agitated mood. When talking to the player, cranky villagers tend to become angry if the player disagrees with them or refuses to do a favor. Like all cranky villagers, Dobie will be invested in his hobby and will often challenge the player to various competitions. He will easily get along with jock, snooty, and other cranky villagers, and occasionally lazy and normal villagers as well. However, he will find it hard to socialize with peppy villagers, as they will seem overstimulated or immature.

House[]

Dobie's default interior in Animal Crossing and the other earlier games consists of nothing but a tea vase. He has the bamboo flooring and the imperial wall. In earlier versions of the game, if given a stereo, he plays Comrade K.K.

In Welcome amiibo, Dobie's house has a home office theme with items such as the editor desk, editor's chair, and large bookshelf. There are also various office (Document Stack, Scattered Papers) and book themed items scattered among the floor and upon a console table such as two stacks of books, book stands, and strapped books. This may allude to Dobie being a writer or author. Dobie also has a modern bed and a phonograph, the latter of which plays K.K. Lament. The exterior of Dobie's house appears very worn down and tattered.

In New Horizons, Dobie's house resembles the office of an author or detective. It has predominantly brown furniture and an overall cozy, vintage theme. In the middle of his house he has a den chair and den desk from the Den Set. The den desk has an essay set and a typewriter on top of it, and an iron hanger stand and pendulum clock behind it. In the top-left corner of his house, Dobie has a whiteboard, in its fact-finding meeting variant, with scattered papers in front of it. He has two cardboard boxes in the corners of his house, one with a document stack, and the other with two stacks of books. He also has a antique console table with a rotary phone, and an antique mini table with a phonograph that plays Agent K.K.. For wallpaper, he uses the Classic-Library Wall, and for flooring, he uses the Dark Herringbone Flooring.
