I s'pose I kinda think of those durn bonsais like my own kids. Now, I gotta run. My precious bonsai babies are due for a nap!

I'm gonna tell you about MY personal treasure. It's this real smooth rock!
― Hopper, New Horizons

Hopper (ダルマン, Daruman?, Dalman) is a cranky penguin villager in the Animal Crossing series. He is a crested penguin named after the Rockhopper penguin, even though his design is based off a Macaroni penguin (the two look quite similar to the untrained eye; however, they're both crested penguins). He also appeared in Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori. Hopper is the only penguin with a cranky personality. He has appeared in all games of the Animal Crossing series. He also appears on the album cover for K.K. Parade.

He has the music hobby.

Appearance[]

Hopper in Animal Crossing

Hopper is a black and white crested penguin with a yellow beak, red eyes, and long, straw-like eyebrows (like the Rockhopper penguin) which give him a somewhat angry or grumpy expression. He initially wears a Dragon Shirt.

Personality

Below is a brief description of the cranky personality. For more information, click here.

Cranky villagers will usually appear in a grouchy or agitated mood. When talking to the player, cranky villagers tend to become angry if the player disagrees with them or refuses to do a favor. Like all cranky villagers, Hopper will be invested in his hobby and will often challenge the player to various competitions. He will easily get along with jock, snooty, and other cranky villagers, and occasionally lazy and normal villagers as well. However, he will find it hard to socialize with peppy villagers, as they will seem overstimulated or immature.

House[]

In Animal Crossing, Hopper's house starts with Cabin Series furniture in it. He also starts with four totem poles and some more random items like barrels. Hopper starts with three gyroids: a Tall Droploid, Tall Gongoid, and Mega Timpanoid. When he has a stereo, he will play Lucky K.K. on it.

In Wild World and City Folk, his house remains practically unchanged from Animal Crossing.

Pocket Camp[]

Hopper was added to Pocket Camp in the June 27, 2022 update.

Hopper's preferred theme is cool, and he primarily gives cotton as a reward. His profile reads:

❝ Before you ask, he's tried eye drops, and no, they don't help. It's just a thing we all have to live with when he comes around, staring at us.❞

In Dōbutsu no Mori[]

I'm too old for this. *twitches eye*
― Hopper (after catching a Moai Statue), Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori

In the movie, he was not a main character. Instead, he was the film's comic relief (appearing in the foreground/background throughout a film, not knowing a character's background information). He is seen fishing all year round in the same spot, near the bridge by the river. Throughout the film, he catches a variety of things, excluding fish, but at the end credits finally catches a small fish.

He was voiced by Hisao Egawa.

Trivia[]

  • As sometimes revealed on April Fool's Day in New Leaf, Hopper is the eldest of two siblings.
  • In New Horizons, Hopper's preferred styles are Cool/Simple, and his preferred colors are Red/Yellow.
  • He shares his birthday with Resetti on April 6. Ironically, the two co-existed in the movie, but were not aware of each other at all.
