The painting in real life is called The Blue Boy and was painted in 1770 by Thomas Gainsborough who was from Sudbury, Suffolk, England. It is an oil painting and is currently seen in Huntington Library, San Marino, California. It is considered one of Gainsborough's most well known works, although not much is thoroughly known about it. The subject is believed to be the son of a wealthy merchant. Although the reason for its creation is unknown, it was generally stated by some painters who reported after Gainsborough's death that the artist himself had gotten into a discussion on whether or not a predominant color of blue on an earthy background could result in a fine painting.[1] The Blue Boy demonstrates Gainsborough's ability of balancing cool colors with the contrasting warm ones and was most likely dedicated to another painter, Anthony van Dyck, whom he admired. It has been popularly known due to its outrageous price of about $725,000 (about 9 million dollars in 21st century standards).

Donation to the museum[]

After donating it to the museum, a museum label will give a description of the painting. In New Horizons, the museum label reads:

The Blue Boy
Thomas Gainsborough, 1770
Oil on canvas

Gainsborough was known for his innovative use of colors in his traditional portraits, like this one. Although he preferred painting landscapes, his portraits would be the defining work of his career.

  • Note: Prior to New Leaf, paintings did not have visual differences between forged and genuine versions. Therefore, paintings given to Blathers were fake or authentic at random.
