The calm painting (おだやかなめいが, odayakanameiga^?, calm masterpiece) is a painting that can be obtained in Wild World, City Folk, New Leaf, and Happy Home Designer. In New Horizons the painting can be donated to the museum and be added to the art gallery. As this painting can be bought from Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler, players should keep in mind that they may be purchasing a forgery. It is based on a painting by Viennese artist Georges Seurat, entitled A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It was painted using divisionism, a method by which the artist uses dots of bright color to create different tones by the means of optical blending, and is one of the most well-known examples of its kind. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte was painted from 1884 to 1886.

Unfortunately, with age, the yellow colors used by Seurat have faded into browns due to the compound he used, zinc chromite. Due to the fact that this color degrades over time (and is also toxic, carcinogenic, and can result in death with prolonged exposure), it is rarely used in art.

Seurat, known as the founder of neo-impressionism, invented the use of brightly colored dots. His method, which does not involve mixing pigments, took time. This piece, for instance, took two years. It shows a crowd enjoying a day off at the river Seine in France.
