「ヤシガニを 捕まえた! 木のぼり 上手!」 —Animal Forest e+
- "I caught a coconut crab! It's a good tree climber!" (translation)
The coconut crab (ヤシガニ, Yashigani?) is a type of nocturnal insect that only appears in Animal Forest e+. It is the final member of the crab family, and the rarest of the three crabs with the sell price of 300 Bells. In real life they are best looked for during the night or early morning, which is referenced in-game.
It appears inside of trees, and must be shaken out. They do not occur on the Island's Coconut trees; only those in the village, and when shaken out it falls with a cartoony "plonk" onto its back, where it flips over and attempts to escape from the player, albeit very slowly. The Coconut Palms do not require fruit on their branches to contain this "insect", and it is the only bug that can be shaken out of a fruit-bearing tree (spiders, bagworms and bees cannot be found in fruit trees).
Like the other crabs, it makes a scuttling sound when traveling. In the home it is within a bug cage adorned with a yellow lid as a reference to its medium sell price.
Donation to the museum[]
In Animal Forest e+[]
Upon donation it scuttles around the Coconut Palm at the bottom left of the bug room.

The coconut crab is the largest land-living arthropod in the world, at a length of over 1m. Due to the way arthropods breathe, it is unlikely that any species could evolve to be larger than this. It is found on many of the islands of the Indian and Pacific oceans. In some areas of the Pacific, coconut crab meat is considered a delicacy; over-hunting has led to the species being protected in some areas. Being nipped by the coconut crab's enormous pincers is very painful because it is hard to get them to let go. The coconut crab is not, however, dangerous to humans, despite its intimidating size.
