- "I got a horseshoe crab! I hope it's lucky!" —New Horizons
The horseshoe crab is a benthic, aquatic life form found at the bottom of the ocean in New Leaf and New Horizons. Diving is the only way of capturing it.

In New Leaf[]
In New Leaf, an information board in the aquarium will list information about this creature.
"Horseshoe crabs are called "living fossils," as they have not evolved since the age of the dinosaurs. Their backs are covered by a hard shell, forming a simple silhouette with their flat backs and long tails. Though referred to as crabs, they're actually more closely related to spiders and scorpions."
In New Horizons[]
Upon donation or selecting "Tell me more about this!", Blathers the curator will say:
"Some might say it's good luck to catch a horseshoe crab. But I am NOT among them, eh wot! Though called a "crab," this beast is an arthropod and thus more akin to spiders and scorpions! Its long tail resembles a scorpion stinger, in fact! Though it's quite harmless, they say. A "living fossil," the horseshoe crab has been around since before the dinosaurs. With that tank-like shell, I suppose it WOULD be the one to survive. But here's what truly rattles me to my beak... During breeding season, horseshoe crabs crawl up on the beach and make nests together in the hundreds. HUNDREDS OF HORSESHOE CRABS! And with that I can say no more."

Trivia[]
- In New Horizons, Blathers claims that horseshoe crabs aren't actually crabs, but arthropods. While his claim that horseshoe crabs aren't crabs is accurate (they're actually arachnids), the implication that crabs aren't arthropods is false, as crustaceans are a subphylum of arthropods.
- Even though they're a deep sea creature, the Horseshoe Crab is found in the freshwater portion of the Fish exhibit in the Museum in New Horizons, more specifically in the Sturgeon exhibit.
Further information[]
- Main article: Horseshoe crab on Wikipedia
Horseshoe crabs are considered to be living fossils. Horseshoe crabs resemble crustaceans, but belong to a separate subphylum, Chelicerata, and are closely related to arachnids (e.g., spiders and scorpions). They do not have hemoglobin in their blood; instead, they use hemocyanin to carry oxygen, and because of the copper present in hemocyanin, their blood is blue.
