Wendell • | Gallery |
Wendell (セイイチ, Seiichi?) is a pattern-selling/traveling artist in the Animal Crossing series. He has slightly different roles in each game he has appeared in, but they all revolve around his artistic ability and design skills.
Appearance[]
Wendell is a blue walrus with two large, white tusks. He has a large stomach that makes his pyjama-shirt burst and he has a small cross for a belly button. He carries around a canvas and a traveller's backpack with him. He wears a striped, yellow pyjama ensemble with a matching yellow plaid hat with a pom-pom. His name may be a reference to the name Wendall which means "wanderer".
Role[]
In Animal Crossing[]
In Animal Crossing, Wendell comes occasionally and trades one of his wallpapers for a fish; he will sell only 3 (one per character for up to 3 characters in the town) of his wallpapers per visit.
In Animal Forest[]
In Animal Forest, Wendell has a role that is basically the same from Animal Crossing. The only difference is that he only eats fish.
In Animal Crossing and Animal Forest[]
Wendell has a wallpaper selling role in Animal Crossing. He will show up in the player's town on Saturday or Sunday, but has been known to show up on other days too. He appears at a random time of day. He will tell the player he is hungry upon talking to him, and will ask for food. He will eat anything, such as fruit, fish, and turnips. He will give some wallpaper to the player for free as a reward during the weekend and will sell it to the player during weekdays. He disappears after a while.
In Wild World[]
Wendell's role in Wild World is different than it is in Animal Crossing. This time, he gives out unique designs. Upon giving him something to eat when he visits the town, as he is 'starving', he gives a pattern that is unobtainable anywhere else. He will eat fruit, as well as fish. His extreme hunger may be a reference to the stereotypical phrase "starving artist," as he is both. Giving him any type of fruit will yield a pattern already obtained, with the exception of coconuts, which yield a different pattern. He doesn't appear on Sunday or Saturday anymore. Instead, he appears from 6 am to midnight on a Tuesday every two weeks (unless it is the day Redd comes).
In Wild World, Wendell comes from Tuskany. When one of his designs is displayed in the Able Sisters, it will say Wendell from Tuskany. Tuskany is a pun involving the region Tuscany, Italy and tusks, for walruses have them. Wendell is the second step in the Golden Axe Trading Event.
In City Folk[]
Wendell has the same role in City Folk as he did in Wild World, excluding the Golden Axe Trade Event and Redd is taken out of the equation (who now has a store in the City). If the player puts his designs on display at the Able Sisters, and asks to get it, Mabel says, "That design is made by Wendell from Sumware", his town name, which is a pun on somewhere. When the player gives Wendell any type of food, such as fruit, or fish, he will give the player one of his designs depending what fruit or fish the player gave him.
With WiiConnect24 enabled, he may give out designs on behalf of Nintendo as distributed designs, saying something along the lines of "I made this new design, and wondered what you would think..."

In New Leaf[]
In New Leaf, he does the same thing like in City Folk but instead he appears wearing light tan pajamas. His only appearance is that he exists in dreams of others towns using the Dream Suite. His services in New Leaf is the ability to copy other patterns being used in towns. He only appears if the town author only allows their patterns to be copied from their own dream world.
After the Welcome amiibo update, he wears a vest as opposed to pajamas; when visiting Wendell's mobile home the description will say:
'With advances in camper-van technology, Wendell can finally feel at home while 'roughing it' with a fully stocked fridge and chef's kitchen.'
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Wendell doesn't appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a playable character or assist trophy, but he does appear in the game.
He appears as a trophy and in the Smashville stage.

Trivia[]
- He shares his birthday with Hamphrey. Both have a birthday on February 25th.
- In Animal Crossing, when talking to Joan about the Stalk Market, she will state that the player could eat them, but that's not why anybody buys turnips anymore. However, if the player offers a turnip to Wendell, he will state that it is inedible.
- According to Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori, whenever he gets hungry, he gets depressed, and when he gets depressed, he gets hungry again. That might be because he has a big appetite in later games.
- In City Folk, when the player gives Wendell a coelacanth, he will not take it from the player and will say "Oh! My mother told me not to eat these, so I'm going to have to give it back." He will then complain that he is hungry. This may be because of the coelacanth's rarity, due to the fact that they generally don't taste good and can cause sickness.[3]
- In New Leaf, he has the same voice as Phineas.
- Wendell is one of the few characters in the Animal Crossing series confirmed to have a navel. The others are Tangy, Barold, Chabwick, and all Tanukis.
- His German name, Winci, might be a reference to the real-life inventor and artist, Leonardo da Vinci.
- In a similar vein, his Spanish name Da Morsi is also a reference to Leonardo da Vinci, except combined with the first 4 letters of the word "morsel", as in a small amount of food, which references his varied diet and ability to eat a lot. The name may also be influenced by the Spanish word for walrus, which is "morsa".
- His French name, Morsicus, also has the first 4 letters of the word "morsel", just like his Spanish name.
