Main Street (also called the Mall or Shopping District) is an area of the Town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It replaces the City, a place in Animal Crossing: City Folk the Player had to travel to in order to visit unique shops and buildings.

It can be found in the upper-most area of the Town, in front of the Happy Home Showcase and north of the Train Station, across the tracks. The game loads the area when the player has walked up the stairs, similar to when entering a building, briefly showing a loading screen.

It is divided into two, with the Happy Home Showcase in the middle. It offers a variety of different stores and can be upgraded through the Mayoral duties in the Town Hall. To the south is the Village, where the Player and the Villagers live in their houses.

Original BuildingsEdit

When the Player first begins the game, there are only a small amount of stores to begin with. These buildings include Nookling Junction, the Museum and the Able Sisters store, which are to the right (or "West") of the Happy Home Showcase. To the left (or "East"), are the Post Office and Nook's Homes.

Nookling Junction is one of a few stores open at the start of the game. It is owned by Timmy and Tommy Nook, who take on the Nook franchise from Tom Nook in previous games. It can be upgraded 4 times, during which it will sell a variety of different products and change appearance throughout the course of the game.

The Player has a limited choice of items to buy from the store. It sells two Tools, two items of Furniture, one Wallpaper and Carpet, one item of Stationary, one Wrapping Paper and one Fortune Cookie.

The Post Office is a returning building in the franchise, which was last seen in Animal Crossing. It was absent in both Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk, where the Post Office was part of the Town Hall. It is run by Pelly and Phyllis, with both of them working different times of the day.

The Player can use the Post Office to send and receive letters. The player may find their post in their mailbox after certain times, when Pete is delivering post around the the town.

Able SistersEdit

AbleSistersNL
The Able Sisters store is a clothing/tailor store run by Mable and Sable, the Able sisters. It is located to the East of the Mall, next to Nookling Junction and the subsequent Nookling store upgrades.

The Player can buy clothes and accessories, as well as obtain and create designs they can use to customize their clothes, furniture, house and other items.

Labelle runs the Accessories Store in the same building, which can be accessed through the door on the right of the building when outside, or by going through from Mabel and Sable's room.

When the store is upgraded by spending 8,000 Bells in the store, Shampoodle can be built above the store, and Kicks will be built next door to the right of Able Sisters.

Nook's Homes is a new building in the Animal Crossing series. It is run by Tom Nook, who assists the player in customizing their house with new exterior features or by expanding it. Lyle also works here, and is in charge of the Happy Room Academy, a duty he previosly held in Animal Crossing: City Folk.

The Player can choose from a variety of different external features to customize their home, which was limited in previous instalments. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the player has the option to customize the following:

  • Chimneys
  • Doors
  • Fences

  • Exterior Walls

MuseumEdit

The Museum serves mostly the same purpose as in previous games. It is the only building on Main Street that can be found in one of two locations, which is chosen at random by the game. It can be located on either the right or left of the main row of buildings.

The Player can initially donate fish. bugs, paintings and fossils, which will be put on display throughout the museum in exhibition halls. The aquarium is significantly larger and split into two rooms for salt water and fresh water fish.

However, unlike in previous games, the Player can also upgrade the museum to have a second floor with 4 exhibition rooms, which will display whatever the player chooses, such as furniture.

Happy Home ShowcaseEdit

The Happy Home Showcase is a new area that appears in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It is run by Digby, who can be found standing outside the area. Behind the arch is a small plaza with 3 separate areas, with space for 46 homes, with 16 in each area.

The purpose of the Showcase is to allow the player to visit the homes of other players they may have encountered using the Nintendo 3DS StreetPass feature. These are homes the player may not have visited, but belong to other players who have StreetPass enabled on their system. It is a way for Animal Crossing players to share their homes anonymously with other 3DS consoles with Animal Crossing installed.

Obtainable BuildingsEdit

Over the course of the game, the Player can unlock more stores by either buying them through the Mayor responsibilities or they will appear over time when the player has fulfilled certain conditions.
