"I caught a robust cicada! It seems pretty lively to me!" —New Leaf

The robust cicada (ミンミンゼミ, Minmin-zemi?) is a bug found in Animal Forest, Wild World, City Folk, and New Leaf. It makes a unique grinding-like sound which is different to other cicadas. It looks rather small, and its wings are quite longer than its body. It is worth 200 Bells in Animal Forest, but this was increased to 300 Bells in later titles. Robust cicadas are fairly common, but are slightly less so than the Brown Cicada.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf it has two different puns on capture, with one appearing during rain only.

Donating to the museum

Like all bugs in the Animal Crossing series, the robust cicada can be donated to the Museum by talking to Blathers, who will give some information about it.

In Animal Crossing

Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:

"Cicadas. What can one say about these odd insects? They are certainly...noisy! Noisy enough, I should say! Their horrid caterwauling is awfully irritating, you know. About as musical as a train wreck, eh wot? I'm sure that the cicadas have quite valid reasons for such boisterous behavior, but I dare say there are limits. And they have those membranes on their abdomens, which vibrate to create those disturbing tones...Odius."

In Wild World

"When a female robust cicada approaches, the male will change its call, eh wot? To think that they're mere bugs and they play these mind games... Disgusting!"

In City Folk

"Fittingly enough, the robust cicada can issue a robust, loud chirp...and it does so quite often. I've heard this beastie's impertinent cry so often that I've grown rather good at imitating it. Listen! Chiiirp! CHIIIRP! CHIIir..."

It can be found in the middle terrace, on the front-most tree of the middle island, sharing it with the Brown Cicada.

In "New Leaf"

In New Leaf an information board in the big exhibit will give information about this bug.

"Robust cicadas are distinguished by the shortness of their bodies in relation to their wing size. They used to share territories with brown cicadas, but robust cicadas tend to prefer dry locales. As you'd expect, they make a rather robust call, though males actually change their sound around females."

After donating, the robust cicada can be found in the upper right room in the bug exhibit, on the tree between the Walker cicada and the Cyclommatus stag.

Further Information

Robust cicada re

Hyalessa maculaticollis (AKA the Robust Cicada) is a native to Korea, where it is sometimes considered the typical Korean cicada. It is also a native to Japan (where it is called Minmin-zemi ミンミンゼミ as a reference to the sound it makes; "Mean Minmin Minmin me ..." is the commonest depiction) and much of Asia, where they are equally as commonly found. It is often variable in color with individuals appearing from green to black and anywhere inbetween. The color of the cicada relates to its habitat; in high temperatures it is entirely black, but in low temperatures it is greener.
