The Hunters in the Snow is a painting by Dutch Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel in 1565 using oil on wood. It is currently located in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The painting is a genre (a work that depicts an aspect of daily life) and is actually one of a series of six paintings depicting different periods of time. The painting depicts a group of hunters returning to their village after a failed hunt.

In his work, Bruegel makes use of a limited palette of soft colors, in contrast to the variety of vibrant colors frequently used by artists at the time. He applies fine control on the lines and details, which contributes to the linear perspective view (tying the painting by usage of the same colors of the ice/sky) while retaining a sense of flatness.

Donation to the museum[]

After donating it to the museum, a museum label will give a description of the painting. In New Horizons, the museum label reads:

The Hunters in the Snow
Pieter Brueghel the Elder, 1565
Oil on wood panel

A landscape artist from the late Renaissance period, Brueghel was known as the "Peasant Artist." He earned the title for depicting scenes from common peasant life, such as the moment captured here. Note the contrast between the weary hunters and the people frolicking below on icy ponds.

  • Note: Prior to New Leaf, paintings did not have visual differences between forged and genuine versions. Therefore, paintings given to Blathers were fake or authentic at random.
