The seahorse (タツノオトシゴ, Tatsunōtoshigo?) is a type of fish found in the ocean at any time of the day, between the months of April and November. It has a tiny shadow size, the same size as the Clownfish and Goldfish. It sells for 1,100 Bells in Wild World and City Folk, and 1,500 Bells in Animal Forest e+.

In Animal Forest e+ they are very stubborn, and only take the bait if it is literally directly in front of them. The time frame between the strike and the fish fleeing is also very short and close to that of rare fish. Despite all this, they are very easy to find, and are the only tiny-sized ocean fish to occur in Animal Forest e+.

Donating to the museum

As with all fish caught in Animal Crossing series, the seahorse can be donated to the museum in each game by talking to Blathers, who will also give some information on it.

In Animal Forest e+

In Wild World

Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:

"I can't think of a soul who claims to have eaten a meal of seahorse. However, it has been used for centuries as an herbal supplement, that I know. A supplement for what, I haven't the foggiest."

In City Folk

Upon donation, Blathers the curator will say:

"This creature is covered in hard scales that suggest a relation to crabs or shrimp, but it's a proper fish. That said, it's a dreadful swimmer and can't usually move against powerful currents, eh wot? In such environments, the sea horse will cling to kelp and stay there until the waters calm a bit... Seeing those little fellows holding on for dear life makes me want to cheer them on! Cling, sea horse!"

In New Leaf

In New Leaf, an information board in the aquarium will list information about this fish.

"Sea horses don't look like fish, but they still share a lot of distant connections. They use their small dorsal fins and tail fins to swim, but in actuality they're pretty bad swimmers. They wrap their tail fins around seaweed or coral so they won't float away with the current. Once attached, they feed on plankton and small shrimp that float by. The female deposits eggs in the male's pouch, putting the burden of child care on the male."

It can be found in the tube-tank in the northeast corner of the room in the river section of the aquarium.

Further information

A seahorse in real life

There are many species of seahorse in existence, so judging by the coloration and look of the Animal Crossing seahorse, it could possibly be a Red Oceanic Sea Horse. The males carry the eggs in a brood poach located under the tail. Seahorses are fish, albeit extraordinary ones. Physically, very little of them resembles a fish, but an ancient evolutionary path links the two seemingly different creatures. It is a harmless fish, popular in private and public aquariums.
