Oh! Hello! Isn't it the most perfect day to shop for flowers?
― Leif, New Horizons

Leif (レイジ, Reiji?) is a character introduced in New Leaf. He is the one and only sloth species to appear in the series. His name is a Norse name and a play on the word "leaf", the diet of sloths, referencing his gardening hobby. His Japanese name is the English word "lazy", which refers to the slow movement of sloths. In New Horizons, he is also the only source of vegetables in the game.

Appearance[]

Leif is a sloth. He has light brown fur with a white face patch. He has black spots on his blackish-green eyes with a thick line that runs to the side of his face, and a small reddish-brown nose. He has pink circles on his cheeks and his mouth is clown-like. He also has small claws on his hands. For apparel, he wears a green cap with a flower print on it, orange overalls, and small green boots.

Personality[]

Leif often uses the word "happy" as an adjective for certain objects. In particular, this can be seen when talking about his wares where he says "happy [item name]". This may be a reference to the late painter Bob Ross.

Role[]

In New Leaf[]

In New Leaf, Leif runs the Gardening Store, providing seeds (both saplings and flowers), fertilizer, and house plants. Eventually, after enough upgrading, his store merges with Timmy and Tommy's store, where he will be found in the gardening section of T.I.Y. or at the lower-right corner on the first floor of T&T Emporium.

When 50 or more weeds have appeared in the player's town, he can occasionally be seen wandering around the town. When talked to, he sometimes offers to pull some of the town's weeds. Unless he is dozing, in which case he will ask the player to pick the weeds for him, while he simply keeps count on how many weeds are left to pull.

In Pocket Camp[]

In Pocket Camp he appears during "Leif's Spring Flower Event" in search of rare pink, yellow, purple and navy flower ladybugs to restore an ecosystem. The player has to grow white clovers as well as yellow and pink sleeping beauties in their garden in order to attract these ladybugs. Leif will reward the player with various bonuses, including new furniture, new clothing, essences, leaf tickets and even a spring flower foreground and middle ground.

In New Horizons[]

Leif was added as a traveling vendor to New Horizons in the 1.2.0 update. He is available from the start of the game, and is present in the Resident Services plaza from 5am to 10pm. During Nature Day, Leif becomes guaranteed to visit the island that week. After the 1.2.0 update, Harv's island turned into a place where he works, and now players can visit him every day; but he won't be on Harv's island while he's visiting yours.

Leif is a horticulturist who sells a selection of shrubs and flower seeds that are not normally sold by Nook's Cranny. He also offers to buy weeds for 20 bells each, double the normal price.

After the Nature Day event, Leif is the one who gives you the Hedge DIY Recipe. It seems to be somewhat random, but once the player has bought enough items from Leif he will offer you the DIY.

During the month of October, Leif sells pumpkin starts for half of the price of Nook's Cranny; 140 bells per start.

Leif would sell you 5 shrubs when you have money only for one. Some people say this is not a bug but is an Easter Egg.

As of the games 2.0 update, Leif’s weeding pulling service returns. However, a certain number of weeds must be on the island before the player is able to use the service. Pulling weeds costs 100,000 bells and is completed in one day.

On Harv's Island[]

Leif can also appear in the plaza on Harv's Island. To achieve this, you must first unlock Harv's Island by talking to Harvey after having three residents on your island. Then after going there, the next day you will get a letter from Harvey saying to come to his island. After a conversation with Harriet and Harvey, you will have the option to donate 100,000 bells to bring Leif to the plaza. After achieving this goal, Leif will come to the island the next day. He will then act then give you the option of selling weeds to him, buying his products, or removing all weeds from your island for 100,000 bells.

In Happy Home Paradise[]

Leif appears in Happy Home Paradise after the completion of the school. He teaches a lesson about hybrid plants, allowing the player to use hybrid flowers when designing vacation homes.

Quotes[]

New Horizons[]

Should the player attempt to invite Leif to the campsite by scanning his amiibo, he will have the following to say:

"Heya, Player! Were you trying to get in touch with Leif?
'Cause that's me.
Did you invite me to go camping? That's the happiest news I've heard all day, my friend.
But I gotta sit this one out. See, I already promised this nap here that I was gonna take it, so...
Until next time, friend!"

Trivia[]

  • According to Lyle, Leif is very passionate about keeping the town weed-free and gave an inspiring speech to him, Tom Nook, and others.
  • In the English version, the name Leif may be a reference to the English word "lief," meaning willing or glad. Leif is also a name of Scandinavian origin meaning "heir", "descendant" and "beloved". His name when pronounced in English sounds similar to the word "leaf", perhaps because of its relevance to the Gardening Store.
  • Leif and Niko are the only characters in the series to have fully modeled and animated fingers.
  • Leif shares his birthday with Bud. They both have a birthday on August 8th.
  • In New Leaf, he has the voice of a jock villager. In New Horizons, he has the voice of a smug villager.
  • In the Desert Island Escape minigame from Welcome amiibo and amiibo Festival, Leif has the "Sleepy" ability, in which he sleeps an entire day giving him double energy the next. This reflects the "laziness" of real sloths.
