― Luna, New Horizons

Luna (ゆめみ, Yumemi?) is a tapir introduced in New Leaf. She can be found in the Dream Suite adjacent to Club LOL once it is unlocked by talking to Isabelle when she is seen asleep at her desk. She also has the voice of a normal villager, but it is somewhat deeper, similar to Joan.

Luna returns in New Horizons as the host of the dreaming service, which functions nearly identically to the Dream Suite.

Appearance[]

Luna has dark blonde hair tied in a bun, with three white flowers. She has dark brown skin with blue "freckles" underneath her eyes. She also has light pink eyeshadow and red lipstick. Her white and pink contrasting dress is very formal. Her ears are white at the top, descending to brown, and a dark brown color on the inside. Her feet are shod in what appear to be dark red pumps.

Role[]

In New Leaf[]

Luna operates the Dream Suite and allows the player to dream walk in previously visited towns or simply any town picked up over SpotPass. While in this virtual version of the town, the player can do anything they like, though the changes will not be saved to the real version and items cannot be brought back to the real world. Wendell is occasionally in the dream and he can give the visitor that player's patterns to take home.

In New Horizons[]

Luna returns in the 1.4.0 Summer Update (wave 2) for New Horizons, and her role remains unchanged. While she no longer operates the Dream Suite, she will appear to the player via dreaming whenever they decide to sleep on any bed, and allows them to travel to versions of other players' islands that have been uploaded into the "library of dreams". Using Luna's dreaming service, either to upload a dream or visit other dreams, requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. While in the dream realm Luna will hold the player's belongings until they awake. To return home, the player can lay down and sleep on the bed in the plaza.

After the player has installed the update, Luna will send a letter to the player telling them to try sleeping, with an attached present containing the item Luna's bed.

Trivia[]

  • There are some interesting references in her name:
    • Her English name is the Latin, Spanish, and Italian word for "moon".
    • Her Japanese name means "dreaming".
    • Her German name contains the German/English word "Serenade".
    • Her Spanish name, Alakama, is a play on a la cama, or "to the bed".
    • Her Italian name, Sonia, is a play on the word "sonno" meaning "sleepy"
      • Luna's Italian name is also the same name of the Pokémon character Sonia.
  • In Japanese culture, tapirs are said to eat dreams. This may be why Luna appears in the game with her service. Her Japanese name, ゆめみ, also refers to dreams.
  • Along with Joan, Farley, and the player (In the Happy Home Showcase or in a Dream Town) Luna is the only character to have her own unique voice. Her voice, though still distinctly female, is pitched noticeably lower than other female characters in the game.
  • In New Horizons, she has the voice of a snooty villager.
  • It's hinted that it was Luna who made the suggestion to build the Dream Suite to Isabelle.
  • She appears in the background of the Animal Crossing stage, in Super Smash Brothers for Wii U.
  • Luna's birthday is on Leap Day, which means that her birthday occurs only once every four years. Since New Leaf was released, her birthday was celebrated three times: in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
  • In New Horizons, if the player visits an island's Dream Address and it is raining in the dream, then Luna will be carrying an umbrella. It is a black lace umbrella, one of the many umbrellas that can be sold at Nook's Cranny. The sisterly horse Reneigh has one as well.
