Villagers use umbrellas in the rain.
Umbrellas play a small role in the Animal Crossing series. Besides preventing tans, they serve little function than as an accessory. Umbrellas are carried by villagers when it rains - all villagers have a set umbrella, but they may swap them for others after a while.
Uses
Player
Players can spin their umbrellas by pressing the 
button when equipped. In general, this is just for show, but if a player is being chased by bees then they can protect themselves by getting their umbrella out and spinning it before the bees attack. If it is raining while the player presses 'A', water with splash around the player. In Animal Crossing, and New Leaf, equipping an umbrella will prevent the player from becoming tanned when visiting the Island.
Umbrellas can be placed in homes, and take up one floor space. In Wild World, umbrellas are worth +3 HRA points.
Villagers
Each villager will carry around an umbrella during the rain and will make comments to the player which will be different depending on whether or not the player is holding an umbrella. Frog villagers will not carry around an umbrella and will make comments about not having to carry an umbrella because they enjoy the rain.
In the summer months, villagers may carry around a parasol to protect themselves from the sun.
Designs
Patterns made by players can be equipped as umbrellas - one of the four original patterns a player can find in their inventory is an umbrella template. This is useful as a pattern transferred into an umbrella shape uses only a central wedge of the usual square design space.

- If a player is holding an umbrella during the Cherry Blossom season in New Leaf, peppy villagers may comment on the fact that the player is 'keeping all those cherry blossoms from falling on their head' with their umbrella.
