Tah-Dahh!
― Wisp, City Folk

Wisp (ゆうたろう, Yūtarō?) is a spirit (or lamp spirit in City Folk and New Leaf) that appears in the Animal Crossing series in the early hours of the morning (usually between 12 AM to 4 AM). He is absent in Animal Forest, Wild World and initially New Leaf, though he has been added to the game as of an update on November 2, 2016.

Role

The player can find him randomly between the times of 12:00 AM to 4:00 AM. They must catch spirits with their net or find his lamp.

As a reward he gets rid of all weeds in town, paints the player's roof, gives out an item, or in later versions of the game, kills all the roaches in the player's house.

In Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing, the player will need to capture 5 spirits roaming around the town, and return them to Wisp (who stays in the same acre he is found in). His reward is one of three things:

  1. He will remove all the weeds in the player's town.
  2. He will give the player a randomly selected item (furniture, clothing, wallpaper, flooring, or gyroid) that they don't yet have in their catalog.
  3. He will re-color the roof of the player's house.

In Animal Crossing: City Folk

In City Folk, the player will have to find the Empty Lamp somewhere in the town. The rewards Wisp gives are essentially the same as in Animal Crossing, only the Roof painting was changed to the ability to smash roaches, as the roof paint could be bought from all of Tom Nook's Stores (apart from Nook's Cranny), and the random item reward has been updated to give the player a chance to get a random accessory or hat, which they may not already have available in their catalogue. However, the item is usually not rare. Also, if the player doesn't have it in their catalog and they select hat then Wisp will give the player a turban instead.

Wisp in Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Originally, Wisp was completely absent from Animal Crossing: New Leaf. However, he was included in the Welcome Amiibo update.

About a matter of 1-4 days after the update is downloaded, unknown circumstances while the player is wandering around their town can cause Wisp's voice to call for them. If they follow his voice, they will discover his lamp, which he asks them to take to a private place (their house) to be opened. The lamp functions as a piece of furniture and can be placed upon tables. If it's interacted with, Wisp will emerge. However, he is unable to stay outside of his lamp without possessing the body of a villager, so he requests that the player scans an amiibo. If the amiibo is compatible, Wisp will turn into that character.

What happens next depends on the type of amiibo scanned. If amiibo Cards from the Welcome Amiibo series or figures based on characters from the SplatoonMonster Hunter, and The Legend of Zelda series are scanned, Wisp will give two options for a wish: "Come play" or "Give me something". If "Come play" is selected, the character will appear inside of an RV at the campground. If "Give me something" is selected, Wisp will give the player an item.

If a villager amiibo Card from the Animal Crossing series is scanned, Wisp will give two options for a wish: "Move in" or "Give me something". If "Move in" is selected, the villager will move into the player's town. If the town is currently full, Wisp will give the option of asking one of the villagers to move out, giving a random suggestion of who could be asked. If "Give me something" is selected, Wisp will give the player an item.

If a special character's amiibo Card from the Animal Crossing series is scanned, Wisp will give the player the option to either receive the character's picture or to receive an item.

If an Animal Crossing series amiibo figure is scanned, Wisp will give one option for a wish: "Come and visit". If this option is selected, the character will appear at the campground in an RV. If the player visits this character's workplace while they're camping, they will be replaced with Wisp. However, Wisp cannot do their job and asks that the player return when the right person is back.

If the Super Smash Bros. series Villager amiibo is scanned, Wisp will argue that he is too legendary to be possessed, though if begged, he will offer to try and get the villager in question to come and visit and ask the player to meet him at the campground. Wisp's RV will then appear at the campground. When spoken to, Wisp will apologize for not being able to get the villager but explains that he found various items loosely related to the character, which can be purchased like all other items found at the campground.

Note: Wisp can only accept one request from the player per day (e.g. one item, one invitation to the campground etc.) After that he cannot be summoned until the next day.

Trivia

  • It is possible to get Wisp more than once.
  • In Animal Crossing, Wisp will mutter something about a master and what he will do if the spirits aren't recovered.
  • In City Folk, Wisp says that he is scared of ghosts, even though as a lamp spirit he resembles one.
  • In New Leaf, a player can get an unlimited amount of Magic Lamp's by picking it up when he is encountered, then giving it to another player. He will appear in a different lamp after about 3 days.
  • In New Leaf, a weed-removing function can be accessed through Leif once Timmy and Tommy's store upgrades to T.I.Y., in which the player can pay him bells so that he will remove all of the town's weeds, essentially making Wisp's weed removing reward useless.
  • Wisp looks similar to Boos from the Super Mario series.
  • In New Leaf, Wisp has the voice of a lazy villager.
  • Wisp is only one of four visible NPCs (The others being Jack, Farley, and Lloid) who isn't an animal or resembles an animal of any kind.
